THE MOSTELLER STORY
INSTALMENT #2
You folks have been so kind to us as well as so thoughtful about remembering our special days. We have appreciated your cards and prayers...and your efforts to even send flowers. We feel so loved and cared for. Thank you, and may God bless and reward you richly.
Well....to continue our story as we promised earlier ...
Gladys and I were engaged on April 29th, 1939. I did not give her an engagement ring. It was cheaper that way. I did, however, give her my first kiss after dating her for more than a year. She was apparently satisfied and took off running like a frightened cheetah to the girl’s dorm ... since dorm hours were over. As stated in communication # 1, we were married on June 12th, 1941, one week after graduation from college. We decided to get married on a Wednesday night in Oregon City, Oregon, Gladys’ hometown. With Wednesday’s being prayer meeting night, we knew there would be at least 200 people present. That would save writing wedding invitations!
While waiting for that prayer meeting night to come around, my parents, who had never seen ocean water before, wanted to see it ... and dad additionally wanted a picture of himself being hit by a big ocean wave. But when the picture came back, there was no dad, he was under water!
My parents had purchased a bright green suit for me to wear at my graduation. That suit had to do for the wedding. I did borrow $50 from my dad to pay for the wedding expenses as follows ... Marriage license $12, physical exam required by the government $20, bride’s bouquet, attendants corsages and groomsmen’s boutonnieres $6, motel for one night $4, breakfast for two the next morning $1, and the wedding ring she still wears today $6, .......I guess I never did pay my dad back his $50. During our wedding some pranksters thought they knew which car was our getaway vehicle, and so they soaped it up with the words....”Just Married” and other newlywed greetings. It turned out that the car they soaped was that of an “unclaimed blessing” – an old maid – and the soap never did come off her car. All in all, though, the wedding glue must have been strong, because 73 years later we are still together and more in love than ever!
